sampling

sampling
The advent of digital recording technology made possible the extraction of small segments of pre-existing records, which could then be added to new songs. The technique is widely used in dance music, with some samples becoming more widely known than either their original source or the records which subsequently use them—as, for example, in the case of the drum break from James Brown’s ‘Funky Drummer’. The rise of sampling caused widespread debate over the authorship of songs, which resulted in most samples being treated as ‘quotations’ from the original, for which credit is usually given. A later development, ‘timestretching’ —changing the tempo of a sample without altering the pitch—was instrumental in the inception of jungle.
